Road Trip Estonia

Road Trip Estonia with Larry White (Full - wait list only)
July 27-August 8, 2008
estimated $1,550 plus airfare**

Space limited to 6 participants, so secure your spot today!

Join Larry White, Beloit College professor of psychology, for a one-of-a-kind travel experience through Estonia.

The trip will appeal to travelers who like to walk, who like to interact with locals, who like to see and do things that most tourists never see or do, and who like to learn about the history, language, music, and culture of a place. You won’t have a professional tour guide—Larry White will be the guide! And he’ll invite his Estonian friends to join you as you hike through a bog, spend an evening at a jazz club, or do the Estonian sauna experience (complete with honey—don’t ask).

This unique adventure should appeal to alumni who prefer active vacations and don’t require four-star hotels and restaurants. Each participant will book their own flights and pay for their own meals, so the total cost will vary for each person. Some will want to prepare their own meals with ingredients from local markets, and others will want to try a different restaurant every night.

A detailed itinerary is currently being developed; the basic plan is to rent a 9-seat minibus and drive around the country, staying here and there for a couple days at a time. Except in Tartu. Tartu is the university town and will serve as a base for the southern half of the country. You'll stay for four nights in Tartu at a university residence that has small but comfortable apartments.

What will you do? You'll visit the Old Town in Tallinn and the castle at Narva on the Russian border. You’ll visit manor houses, swim in the Baltic, and take a turn on a traditional swing in Lahemaa National Park. You’ll visit the Russian Orthodox convent at Kuremäe, where elderly nuns live off the land. In Tartu, you’ll hang out in the town square, drinking coffee or Estonian beer (which is excellent). You’ll visit a couple of must-see museums, but mostly you’ll be off the beaten path, exploring sand caves that stretch for miles underground and swimming in the prettiest little lake in all of Estonia.

The total amount to be paid to Beloit College will be $1,300 for double occupancy (or $1,660 for single occupancy). The payment will cover all of your accommodations, transportation within the country, admissions to planned events (concerts and museums), and fees for rentals (like canoes or a sauna house). You will book and pay for your own air travel and pay for your own meals. (Some breakfasts will be provided by our innkeepers.) The estimated total cost of the trip will be around $2,750 ($1,300 to the College, $1,200 for airfare, and $250 for meals). The costs for air travel and meals will depend, of course, on where you're flying from and how often you choose to eat at restaurants.
