Center for the Sciences BUZZ: Laboratory Furnishings - Which is the Greener Path to Choose? by Robin Greenler
Now that much of the rougher interior work has been completed, we are receiving deliveries of the laboratory furnishings including lab benches, wall cabinets, and storage cabinets. Generally laboratory casework is made of either wood or steel. Because Beloit wanted this building to be as sustainable as possible, the question arose; which is greener, wood or steel? The answer was less straightforward than expected.
Wood is, of course, a renewable resource. And while being renewable does not necessarily mean sustainable, the wood from our casework supplier, Fischer Hamilton, originates from certified sustainable forests and is harvested sustainably. The adhesives and wood finishes used by Fischer Hamilton all have low VOC content which reduces harmful emissions at their plant and in our building. Their construction process minimizes wood scrap and remaining scrap is used to heat the facility. Not bad!
Steel, on the other hand, is made principally from iron and must be mined. However, unlike wood, steel is highly recyclable. In fact Fischer Hamilton's steel contains at least 25% scrap metal and all scrap produced is recycled back to the steel mill. Their solvent-free powder coat paint finish has no off gassing, and the excess powder is collected and reused resulting in a very green manufacturing process.
Steel recycling is energy intensive; wood harvesting is resource intensive. Steel is more repairable and a bit more durable; wood a bit more aesthetic. Beloit's choice? Hybrid casework that has durable steel bodies with wood cabinet fronts to capture a bit of sustainability strategy from both camps.
